Money Matters: The Classic Questions

Money is always a tricky issue, and this ‘living by faith’ stuff can be more so! We decided to send our intrepid reporters to ask the WEC Directors how it really works…

Let’s start at the beginning: what is WEC's basic financial policy?
We make no public appeal for funds, believing that God prompts his people to make donations to the work and its workers in answer to prayer.

So, if you don't appeal for funds, where does your money come from?

Many individuals and churches give money to WEC's General Fund because they agree with our objectives and statement of faith. Quite a few also give funds to individual WECers.

Do WECers get paid by WEC?

No. WEC International does not pay any of its personnel, or guarantee them any income whatsoever.

But how does that work? Can you really justify recruiting people without guaranteeing a salary or some form of support?
We have sensed God’s call to us as a fellowship to follow financial practices which express that Christ is worthy of our trust for the practical realities of our lives. Each new recruit needs to be convinced that this is also God’s call for them. We keep our eyes on the Lord for every provision and not on the organisation.

It seems a very precarious way of living and working!

Our focus is on the living triune God who is of supreme value and the ultimate satisfaction of our lives.  We know that as we seek first Christ and his kingdom we will have all we need to honour and serve him. So our confidence is not in people (whose circumstances can change) or in churches (whose interests can change), but in God who is unchanging.

Ok then, so how does WEC deal with the money it gets?
All gifts designated for the support of our missionaries are passed on in their entirety. We don’t take a percentage for the expenses of the national office or for home staff.  However, most missionaries volunteer to give 2% (up to a maximum of $60/month) to cover some administrative costs.
Money given for a project is only used for that designated project.   piggybank

If I want to give money, is it straightforward?

Absolutely! Electronic gifts can be transferred to the WEC International bank account: 03 0179 0097120 00.  Make sure you include who your gift is for in the particulars.  If you are sending a gift for the first time, please let us know your mailing address by phone (07 824 3319) or by email (finance@wecnz.org). Cheques can be mailed to WEC International.

To finish, I’m wondering what impact your financial policy has on the work you do?
Because we don’t make our decisions based on money we are not controlled by fixed budgets, but rather by the very great and precious promises of God. Having sought God’s will, we often step out in faith before all the finances are to hand. We have seen wonderful answers to prayer and experience regularly the privilege and beauty of receiving and sharing God’s provision.
