My cunning little plan
So I have decided to inundate you all with emails from airports, so you get lulled into a false sense of security and completely overlook the fact that once I´m in GB I might not be able to email for ages.
Hope it works.
I´m in Lisbon! And SO TIRED. Tried to sleep sitting up at a cafe table for a while but it didn´t really work. I have a six hour transit time so it´s now I wish I had been able to load more books on my ipod! And I tried to practice my Creole but fell asleep at ´How are you?´
Speaking of languages... I am so happy because I managed to have an entire conversation with a German lady who couldn´t speak English, on the plane. She thought I was German, because when she sat next to me she spoke to me and I understood her and nodded, and then I stuck to one word answers etc... but then I decided to ask her if she was on holiday to Lisbon, in English, and she said she didn´t speak English... so then I dragged out my rusty high-school-and-one-semester-at-uni German and we were away laughing!
It was great, I had fun and I´ve been wanting to do that for ages so now I can tick it off my list :-) I did have to drag out the old fifth form staples of ´Können Sie langsame sprechen bitte´ and ´´ Ich verstehe sie nicht.´ (Slow down, I can´t understand you, polite form). But we managed to have quite a decent convo really.
Lisbon is another story! Noone is particularly helpful and it took me forever to find this internet cafe. Which I really don´t need to be doing but hey, give me a break, I have six hours to kill and no comfy seats to sleep on!
I also got thoroughly frisked at Frankfurt before getting on to Lisbon. My shoes beeped for no apparent reason so the security guard was suspicious. She scanned them and then gave me a good solid frisk. She´s definitely a thorough employee. I wouldn´t want her job, personally. My shoes have been on my feet for 48 hours solid and that´s not pretty.
I must say I am quite proud of myself for navigating the airports ´allein´ as my nice German friend said. It really is strange having to decide on your own which random direction to walk in when you don´t know where to go. Being clueless in a twosome is so much nicer! But I´ve made it thus far, now I just hope that some poor person manages to drag themselves out of bed to meet me - my flight gets there at 1am in the morning, poor them. I hope they don´t hold it against me.
I´m also quite proud of the fact that I look surprisingly alert and normal for someone who´s been travelling since Thurs afternoon and hasn´t been horizontal in a VERY long time. It must be the glow of heaven shining upon my countenance. Or the moisturiser I use, one of the two.
Anyway, hope you´re not sick of me yet!
Please excuse all craziness, I´m tired.
Next message comes from Guinea Bissau, hooray!
Abby
